Scientific name: Dermochelys coriacea
Size: Weight-550-1,500 lbs, Length- 6-7.2 ft.
Diet: Jellyfish
Lifespan: About 30 years
Physical Features: Sorry, we had to add a picture of the scariest mouth in the world, belonging to the leatherback sea turtle :o) A couple of facts about it: the esophagus is 6 time longer than that of any other turtle; the spiky projections face inward; the spines, papillae, are made of the same stuff as rhino horns and hair, keratin.
Habitat: The leatherback sea turtle is the most pelagic sea turtle. Pelagic means open ocean dwelling.
Threats: Egg and meat consumption, wildlife trade, habitat loss, by catch (click to read about another animal that suffers from bycatch), climate change, and pollution.
